Day Follows Night by jeighdeigh Day Follows Night by jeighdeigh
Pen & ink, watercolors, acrylics, on Arches 140 lb cold-press watercolor paper, 2013. About 18" x 14".

I did this idea as an oil painting, first, in 1989. The painting was bought by a hippie restaurant I was working for at the time (Nearly Normal's Gonzo Cuisine, in Corvallis, Oregon -- great place to work). For a while, now, I've been thinking about doing it again, because I still like the idea, and I've learned a bit about my craft since 1989. Here it is.

Daily Deviation! I'm still recovering. I'm normally a hermit, and all that sudden attention kind of threw me. But I want to thank most sincerely, here, ensoul, who suggested it, and Astralseed, who featured it. And I want to thank the many many people who made the very kind comments, and those who favorited the work, and those who featured it in groups.

Thanks a lot for your good words about my work! Tips for the beginner? Oh boy ... Let's see ... Spend the money to get good brushes, and take care of them. Use good paper. Paint, paint, paint, paint. The best way to be at home with doing watercolors is to do lots of them, and don't be too precious about any of them -- at least at first. Hone your drawing skills. Don't be afraid of making messes. If you do preliminary outlines on the paper, with pencil, draw lightly. Play. Do big wet washes, covering big areas of the paper, and let other colors bleed into them, while they're wet. Do abstract things. I don't care much for non-representational work, as a rule, but if there's nothing recognizable in the painting, then you're less likely to be too concerned about getting a detail right, or rendering a face right, and you can just play around with the medium. Get books on painting in watercolors, and study them. Learn to work fast, filling up the paper with color as quickly as possible. You might be like me, and love detail, but beginners are all too likely to get bogged down in details, and lose sight of the big picture. Work loose at first. That way you'll get relaxed with the medium, at home with it. Don't work tightly at first, and think you'll loosen up later. Do it the other way around -- loose and sloppy and free, at first, and then tighten up as you gain experience. Did I mention honing your drawing skills? Experiment with color -- a lot. Play around with color right out of the tube, really intense. Bone up on color theory, and color mixing. Get some idea of how you can get from the primaries -- yellow, blue, red -- to any other color. And paint, paint, paint, paint. And in the immortal words of Winston Churchill, "Never, never, never, never, never, never, never give up."

I like, amongst other things, how the land is curved rather than just flat as normal
